Oxidative Stress and the Toll on your Beauty/Brains
Today we are going to go over a great topic, oxidative stress.
The reason why I wanted to bring that up is that it plays a huge role within our skin, our body, our mental, our physical, our food, it’s in everyday environment, and I feel like it’s getting worse, and I think a lot of people should be educated on this topic.
Let’s just start with this. If you are up to date on your skincare knowledge, you have heard about oxidative stress, and especially with nutrition and diet on top of that, especially in the past year. A result of free radical damage, oxidative stress, it’s caused by our environment, whether it’s self-induced lifestyle factors or external pollutions, UV radiation, and now it is thought to be one of the biggest causes of premature aging out there. So what causes oxidative stress, and how can we prevent it from ruining our body, our cells, our skin? Today we’re going to go over a couple of different things. We’re going to go over skin, body, food, all of that, all into one topic today.
What causes oxidative stress? The first step in lowering your levels of oxidative stress is knowing exactly what contributes to it. Many factors contribute to excess free radical damage or overload, which in turn leads to oxidative stress, including pollution, exposure to UV rays, sugar, fat, diets, and unhealthy lifestyles.
How does oxidative stress happen on your skin? Over-production of free radical damages healthy cells in the body, period event. This in turn causes inflammation. Inflammation limits the production of skin-plumping collagen, elastin, and hyaluronic acid in the dermal layer. The dermal layer is your deeper layer of the skin, that is where everything is formulated. Resulting in fine lines and wrinkles.
Furthermore, this inflammation can lead to a breakdown of the cermacide layer between the cells. Now, those cells are the shields that happen from water loss. So that is what leads you to dehydration, crepiness, and common complaints in winter when the continuous contrast between cold weather and indoor central heating can exacerbate the dryness. Eliminating oxidative stress is important with a daily assault of UV protection, eliminating pollution and stress that many of us are exposed to daily, but there are some simple ways to limit its wrath and protect your skin from premature aging.
So the first part that we are going to go over is oxidative stress. I’m going to go over what are antioxidants because antioxidants are what is going to help you to alleviate the oxidative stress. So antioxidants are substances that neutralize or remove free radical damage. The neutralizing effects of antioxidants help to protect the body from oxidative stress.
So example: oxidants include vitamins A, C, and E. A lot of fresh berries and fruits contain a high amount of antioxidants. Like free radicals, antioxidants come from several different sources. Cells naturally produce antioxidants, such as glutathione. A person’s diet is also an important source of antioxidants. Food, such as fruits and vegetables, provide many essential antioxidants in the form of vitamins and minerals that the body cannot create on its own.
So I am going to go over a little bit about what we can do internally for food-wise. I am a 1stPhorm Legionnaire, which I’m not sure that you guys know who that is and what that is, but it’s a supplement company. And it’s not just a regular supplement company, it’s a supplement company that cares about what you’re ingesting into your body. And I resonated and connected with them roughly about five, six years ago, and the reason why is because of their protein, their products are exceptional. And they’re only growing to become better, and I think it goes hand in hand… Well, I don’t think, I know it goes hand in hand with your skin, what you’re doing internally and what you’re putting on externally with your skin.
So I wanted to go over their new product that’s been out, I think it’s been out for maybe a year or two years at the most. And that is the Red Powder, which is a prebiotic superfood. So they have greens powder as well, which I know that you guys are familiar with, but the red powder is exceptional for what I’m talking about today. So I’m just going to go over.
In today’s world, there are fewer red superfood products than green superfoods. So I’m sure that you’ve heard of green powders, they’re pretty much everywhere. But there have been many benefits to utilizing a red powder, some of which you can’t get from your greens. So to help you get results and to improve your results, most importantly, long-term health and wellness are key.
So why are red superfoods important? Reds are just as important as greens. What I mean by this is that fruits and vegetables are a crucial aspect of a good nutrition plan and promoting overall health and wellness. Both fruits and vegetables are important because they provide your body with different micronutrients and phytonutrients that your body can use to carry out daily tasks.
As you go throughout your day, your body constantly has to defend itself from the environment: defending against contaminants in the air you breathe, the water you drink, and the food you eat. Your body also has to defend itself against the havoc that prolonged periods of stress, especially right now with what we’re going through, as well as strenuous workouts can have on your body, not to mention any consumption of toxins, such as alcohol or highly processed foods or smoking. And what a lot of people don’t know as well as when you do you have those carbohydrates in your diet, your body goes through oxidative stress just to break down carbohydrates and sugars in your body in general.
So the benefits of the red superfood powder. There are quite a few benefits you will receive from using a high-quality red superfood powder. And that’s not just going over directly this product, there’s a lot of other products that are out there on the market as well, that is beneficial. So what you want to focus on when you’re looking at those red superfoods is you want to make sure that they’re rich in antioxidants, they improve your heart health and your blood flow, they help you with your weight management, they help you with healthy aging, and they help you with improved energy levels.
So I want to go over, what are polyphenols? So polyphenols are one of the major factors in the red superfoods powder. Polyphenols are a category of chemicals and naturally occurring in plants. There are more than 500 unique polyphenols. These compounds give a plant its color and can help to protect it from various dangers. When you eat these plants with polyphenols, you reap the health benefits of them as well.
So how do you get polyphenols into your diet? The best way to get them into your diet is a dose of polyphenols, incorporating plenty of foods with polyphenols in your diet. You will hear me say time in and time out whole foods first. But whole foods don’t have 100% of everything that we need in them, so you do have to supplement. I highly suggest Opti-Reds. I’m not a product pusher, but do your education on it. You’ll see a huge difference within your skin over some time.
Now I want to get back to pretty much my scope of what I deal with, and that is with your skin. So by now, I went over plenty of things to do internally, but pollution wreaks havoc on our health and our appearance of our skin. Not only does it block our pores, but it also increases the level of free-radical damage in our skin.
As a result, our skin protective barrier is weakened, and our youth-boosting collagen and elastin stores are compromised, leading to dull, dry skin and breakouts. If you live in an urban environment, it can seem impossible to avoid these aggressors, but there are certain steps you can take to lower your level of exposure to pollutants that age your skin and cause breakdown. Such as avoiding smoke and secondhand smoke; reducing the number of trips you take in a car per day; investing in a good air purifier, which I have one in my house and I have one in each room in my clinic, and also with investing in that, you’re going to clear some of the pollutants in your home that linger in your air; wearing a sunscreen with high levels of UVA protection, and I go over that in one of my last podcast about UVA protection and how beneficial it is for your skin.
Invest in the right skincare. Make sure it’s natural, make sure there’s not a lot of preservatives in there, make sure that it’s super clean. Similar to your diet, products can help to neutralize free radicals and reduce the impact of oxidative stress and skin aging. Vitamin C is commonly recognized by a huge amount of dermatologists and skincare gurus out there. Antioxidants are known to neutralize free radicals and is also vital for collagen and elastin production while brightening and plumping your complexion. It also minimizes the pigmentation caused by UV exposure. Now UV exposure is caused by your lighting, it’s caused by sun exposure, it’s caused by your computer, you’re getting it all the way around.
So products that contain natural plant antioxidants also work to inhibit free radicals, attaching and breaking down healthy cells. So these are just my top recommendations. I’m going to go over what I use for oxidative stress for my skin. So I have a product and it’s called Derm Repair. Now Derm Repair is a DNA repair serum. It is patent and it helps to transform the skin, like amazing, it’s a phenomenal product. So in a clinical trial that we did it reversed the AK’s heals at broken capillaries. So I noticed that even within my clients, the broken capillaries over some time of being on this product started to go away and heal themselves on their own. It will firm the skin up to 110%, it will tighten your eyelids and improve fine lines, even more. It also reverses acne scarring by 30% to 50%.
My question that I get a lot of times from people is, how does it do so much? Honestly, the secret is that the ingredient comes alive in the bottle. We have to let the product sit and incubate for over a month in a lab before we can bottle it. Unlike typical vitamin C products, we focus on C’s most important activity, which is the amino acid activation. In your skin vitamin C, which is the amino acid, which makes them sticky and ready to be used in wound healing as well as providing antioxidant protection.
Because we add minerals and other key components to this patent formula, we can provide a product that instantly goes to work healing for your skin first. As a result of this product, Derm Repair contains hydroxyproline, hydroxylysine, and hydroxy glycine in a large percentage, which bypasses the bottleneck in the skin we face from the shortage of vitamin C. So this serum is also concentrated, so when you use our mister, which is our Hydro Spray, which is recommended with the product, it causes an amber color, and it provides a healthy, tinted glow to the skin that works easily to maintain any regime. It is one of my amazing products, it is the product that I recommend to every single person. It will change your skin dramatically. It will even help with skin tags, sun damage, but most of all, free radical damage.
The next one that I do want to highlight, and I’m not going to go over it too much because I did go over it in my last podcast, which was about sunscreen, is our sunscreen, which has a UVA protection. It’s a 13%, and it’s a mineral-based, so you’re not getting any chemicals in that sunscreen besides what is a naturally derived product.
So I made this a little short and sweet, but I hope that you guys enjoyed a little bit of rundown today on oxidative stress. If you need any help, please reach out to me. If you have any questions for any of my podcasts coming up, I would love to highlight your questions in a Q&A. And I also have, starting at the middle to end of June is the new webinar that I will be offering. It’s a weekly webinar to everybody, and it will be live questions and answers, and we can give you more rundown on your skin needs, nutrition, and any questions that you guys have on products.
